Teams were required to qualify for the finals for the first time, although England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland opted not to compete as they held their own championships. The World Cup hosts enjoyed great success though as Italy won the tournament courtesy of a 2-1 extra-time victory over Czechoslovakia in the final in Rome. |
